Queensbridge Collective
As part of the signature Queensbridge Collective development in Charlotte’s South End, Taproot Construction was selected to install a driven soldier pile and lagging wall supporting excavation for the foundation of Tower 1. The four-sided earth retention system was designed to accommodate construction of a 10-foot-thick mat footing that will support the new 42-story residential high-rise.
The mat footing itself was supported on deep drilled shafts installed by others. To simplify the earth retention design and reduce overall system height, the excavation was sloped where feasible, limiting the maximum cut to 10 feet or less. This approach allowed for the use of a cantilevered soldier pile system without the need for internal bracing or tiebacks—streamlining installation and improving constructability within the urban footprint.
Taproot’s scope required careful coordination with surrounding trades and sequencing of wall installation to meet the demanding schedule of this high-profile, skyline-defining project.
