Centene Headquarters
Taproot Construction was engaged to install a temporary earth retention system to facilitate construction of a cast-in-place concrete retaining wall at the Centene campus in Charlotte, North Carolina. The wall was located adjacent to an active roadway, which needed to remain open throughout construction. Due to limited space and the inability to lay back the excavation, a vertical support solution was required to allow safe installation of the retaining wall footing.
Taproot installed a temporary drilled casing and lagging wall to meet the project’s excavation support needs. The presence of shallow partially weathered rock (PWR) within the pile embedment zone presented drilling challenges that ruled out conventional soldier pile installation. Instead, Taproot utilized cased drilling methods to maintain hole integrity through the variable subsurface conditions, followed by timber lagging as excavation progressed in lifts.
This approach minimized movement near the roadway, maintained a safe working environment, and allowed construction to proceed without disruption to adjacent infrastructure.
